349 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
San Francisco, California
Fog adds magic to so many different kinds of scenes. It's one of the things I was most excited about when I moved to Marin County -- fog heaven.
Since moving to the north bay, I have discovered countless vistas and compositions that have rarely or never before been photographed. And then there are views like this -- timeless classics. Some photographers are drawn to classic views and rarely explore beyond them; others avoid them at all costs and only seek out "new".
My personal view is, classic views are beloved for a reason, but the key is finding the right conditions and compositions that bring out the best in them.
These conditions aren't always common, though. For example, we all know fog is a regular occurrence at the Golden Gate, so much so that it has a name, Karl-- but having the fog *this low* so the bridge and city rise *above* it, is rare. And the kinds of weather systems that drive the low fog usually bring clear skies above. Low fog with clouds above is exceedingly rare, and that's what I love about a photo like this: it captures a familiar scene, but in a special way.
This view wasn't my original plan this morning. I had tried somewhere completely new, which was about a half hour's drive away. I photographed the dawn twilight there with the city lights twinkling above the fog, which was also incredible-- but then the fog retreated on me and left me scrambling. Fog often does this kind of thing, it has a mind of its own, so thinking quickly on our feet is critical. I was running out of time as the sun was already about to crest the horizon, but I decided I could make it to the Marin Headlands in time and the light would still be golden. Sure enough, as I arrived, the sun began to peek out in between the clouds and everything was perfect. Planning is the first step, but this one is an ode to spontaneity.
