150 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Marin County, California
During my time living in the North Bay, I have discovered countless vistas and compositions that have rarely or never before been professionally photographed. Some are in areas that thousands of people pass every day, and others are on remote wilderness trails. Beauty truly is all around us.
This view is known mainly to the locals of a small nearby town, who take their morning hikes on beautiful trails like this one. I had explored the area fairly extensively, and had even caught a beautiful foggy morning here on another day. I knew I wanted to come back at some point to capture a clearing storm, with its fog trails in the valley.
That day finally came. As a meteorologist, I knew the odds were high, so I'd set an early alarm to check on the conditions. They looked great. Alas... it was 6am, and the pillow monster won. I went back through nearby webcams later, and couldn't believe what I had decided to skip. It was exactly what I had been dreaming of, the kind of conditions that come once a year... if you're lucky.
Well, the very next morning, almost unbelievably... it repeated. I had a second chance. There would be no fooling me twice! I hiked up the mountain in the rain, and waited for the storm to break and the light to come. It did, and it was so stunningly beautiful. I was grateful to be there, and made this VAST photo. No other image like this exists, and perhaps none ever will.
In the end, we're all human. We all make mistakes. And we deserve a second chance.
This image is part of my Awaken series, which showcases the beauty of little-known areas, with the goal of inspiring locals to explore and love our backyard. As of the time of publishing, there is no other image like this in existence. There will undoubtedly be attempts to duplicate it, but few will succeed with the conditions and method required for a large print. As with most images in the Awaken series, serious buyers may choose to have the location revealed to them. I hope you enjoy it!
