This particular view, on this particular morning... this was the moment when I decided I was moving to Marin. I just stared into the layers of fog, hills, houses, and skylines, and I said, "nope, I'm not leaving."
Well, I DID have to drive back to San Jose that night... but just three months later, that dream became reality, and now we live in this stunning county!
This view was inspired by a nearby webcam, which we've used for many years for monitoring fog at the Golden Gate Bridge. It's ideally positioned, because when the fog at the bridge is perfect, it usually doesn't reach this location, so the camera maintains a clear view. But none of us actually PHOTOGRAPHED from here -- we simply used it to scout the conditions elsewhere.
Several years ago, while checking fog conditions at the bridge, I started to wonder if an image like this would be possible. It doesn't normally flow like this -- it comes in through the gate, and leaves this area clear. After studying the patterns and checking on every morning that had a chance, I decided after a few years that it probably just wasn't possible.
Well, fast forward almost 5 years, and one morning at 5am... I saw something promising. It seemed to have a chance. What did I have to lose, besides a little sleep?
Well, it happened. And I haven't seen it repeat since. There were many incredible, special, and unique moments this morning... but this one, oh my. The kiss of magical light, awakening the whole county. It is the photo I chose to hang in my own living room, and many Marin families have chosen it too.
This is the cover photo of my Awaken series, which showcases the beauty of little-known areas, with the goal of inspiring locals to explore and love our backyard. As of the time of publishing, there is no other image like this in existence. There will undoubtedly be attempts to duplicate it, but few will succeed with the conditions and method required for a large print. As with most images in the Awaken series, serious buyers may choose to have the location revealed to them. I hope you enjoy it!
