Fog adds magic to so many different kinds of scenes. It's one of the things I was most excited about when I moved to Marin County -- fog heaven.
During my time living in Marin County, I have discovered countless vistas and compositions that have rarely or never before been professionally photographed. Some are in areas that thousands of people pass every day, and others are on remote wilderness trails. Beauty truly is all around us.
On this morning, I sensed there would be perfect conditions for a vista I had been hoping to capture for many months. It was about an hour hike up in the dark, but this looked like the day, so off I went, straight up the mountain. As I climbed higher, I noticed something concerning... another fog layer was forming above me. A big yikes. But fog changes every minute, so this could happen. About halfway up the hill, it became clear that this was not going to work out as I'd hoped. I hiked down a bit, and quickly captured a few panoramic photos of a spectacular scene from about halfway up the hill, before the higher fog engulfed everything. It wasn't quite what I'd come for, but that's part of the game. It was still extremely beautiful.
After a bit, the fog began to engulf me, so I ran down the hill and started to drive to a nearby spot to take a different hike. I noticed the fog was quickly lowering, so I diverted to a different trailhead, grabbed my bag and ran as high as I could, and this was the scene waiting in front of me. I quickly captured it, and turned around only to find the scene I had initially set out to capture earlier, now looked perfect. I uttered a few choice words at myself for leaving, but, really, how could anyone have known?! While the idea that I could have been somewhere else clouded my enjoyment for a few moments, it quickly faded as I realized that what I was experiencing here was also a very rare and special treat. That only set in more after I got home and saw the photos.
In the end, things always seem to work out. I'm still waiting for the right conditions for the other photo... but that day will come, and I will be there!
This image is part of my Awaken series, which showcases the beauty of little-known areas, with the goal of inspiring locals to explore and love our backyard. As of the time of publishing, there is no other image like this in existence. There will undoubtedly be attempts to duplicate it, but few will succeed with the conditions and method required for a large print. As with most images in the Awaken series, serious buyers may choose to have the location revealed to them. I hope you enjoy it!
