Sometimes, good things happen when things don't quite go as planned. On this day, I knew there was beautiful and rare low fog flowing through the Golden Gate, and I knew this patch of big purple Pride of Madeira flowers was likely blooming, as I had photographed a similar vantage point in a previous year. So I made my way over to the Marin Headlands, and hiked over to this hill. The flowers were in full bloom, but the fog had risen a bit higher, and the bridge was barely visible. Because of all the fog, it was very windy, eliminating any hope of successfully completing the difficult method of focus blending for a sharp telephoto image from front to back.
Being forced to change my plans on the spot is often how some of the best creativity comes out. So, instead of my original plan to photograph from above the flowers with a tidy image highlighting the bridge, I decided to get down IN the flowers, and show the peeks at the incredible vistas through them. I only had short windows of 10-20 seconds when the bridge would be visible, so I made sure my VAST photo lined up with those times. The final image turned out far more spectacular than the classic view I had come for (and already captured before). It makes us feel like we're standing in the flowers, peeking through at the amazing scenery behind, with fog flowing over the hills. Pure bliss! And YOU, of course, can even enjoy the photo without feeling the cold wind!

Our photographic prints are created using a specialty, large-format fine art printer designed to produce archival, museum-grade prints. They are true "chromogenic" prints: light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom using state-of-the-art lasers to produce the sharpest possible image. Our photographic prints are available in one of two finishes: glossy and lustre. Glossy prints have a rich, silky saturation and are great for environments where the lighting and reflections have been carefully thought through. Lustre prints have a bright, sparkle-like finish that diffuses reflections and are therefore more versatile for environments where the lighting and reflections are less under your control.
Your print comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the artist and the printmaker: one that you will affix to the finished piece and one that remains standalone. Additionally, your print's provenance is tracked and verified using state-of-the-art digital technology. Learn more.
Our acrylic glass displays are ready-to-hang works of art that contain one of our photographic prints sealed between flame-polished acrylic glass and an aluminum backing. A hidden mounting brace on the rear causes the display to gracefully "float" off the wall for a sleek, modern frameless look that complements nearly any decor style.
