I often go hiking around my local areas for fun, and I bring the camera just in case. This time, I parked at a trailhead I'd never been to, in thick fog, and started hiking up on a trail I'd never heard of. I couldn't see 100 feet up the trail, and it was cold and breezy. I did have some hints in my meteorologist box, though...
There was only one other car in the parking area. I soon ran into that person, and I asked them, "is it foggy for a while?"
"It's foggy for miles. All the way."
This didn't match what I was expecting, but it planted a little seed of doubt. I decided to press on. Worst case, it was exercise, fresh air, and somewhere new.
After about an hour of hiking, it became clear the other person was wrong. The sun began to shine, and I could see I was near the top of the fog. Soon after, beautiful views opened up above the ocean of clouds. (And it must have been 25 degrees warmer!)
I walked around for a while, just exploring and searching for inspiration. In a matter of seconds, this scene appeared. I scrambled to set up a tripod and fire off a couple single shots, then this VAST photo. Moments later, this scene was all gone, replaced with thick fog.
Sometimes, you just have to be there!
