Wild Goose Island is in the middle of St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park in Montana. This is a famous view located on the Going-to-the-Sun road. It has been featured in books, magazines, TV shows and movies. My personal favorite tidbit about this location is that it was used for the opening of The Shining.
Glacier National Park lies in the Rocky Mountains in northern Montana. It is a stunning banded mountain range carved by the receding glaciers with over 50 glaciers and 200 lakes. While many of these can be seen from the road the most amazing views can be found once you begin exploring the over 730 miles of back country trails found in the park. Numerous plant fossils can be found in the park along with some animal fossils that experts have yet to identify.
Since much of the west was on fire the park had suffered smoke filled days. It proved to be a mighty obstacle to making great photos. For this morning the smoke was not awful yet, and as the sun rose on it almost created a warm glow across the lake. Giving this already otherworldly place an even more unique look. This VAST photo was created about 30 min after sunrise. I waited until the first light started to hit the mountains across from me and add some depth and warmth to the scene.
