Mount Rainier also known as Tahoma or Tacoma is the tallest mountain in the state of Washington. It is a very active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest. It is just a short 59 miles southeast of the city of Seattle. At an elevation of 14,411 ft, it is the tallest mountain in Washington state and in the Cascade Range. As wonderful as the park is, the mountain is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. The large number of glaciers on the mountain, while stunning, would make an eruption even more deadly.
John Muir climbed Mount Rainier in 1888 and was an early advocate to protect the mountain and surrounding area. It gained full park status in 1899 by President William McKinley and became Mount Rainier National Park.
When John Muir climbed the mountain, he made a comment that still holds true today. While the view from the top was great, he conceded that it was best appreciated from below. I must say that I agree, though seeing the mountain is not always easy. The mountain is often covered by a thick layer of clouds. So much so that on clear days people native to Seattle may comment “the mountain is out today”.
This VAST photo was taken around an hour before sunset at Tipsoo lake. Tipsoo is a high elevation alpine lake near the summit of Chinook Pass. About thirty minutes prior to this photo there was not a cloud in the sky. Just after this series of photos was created so many clouds rolled in that you could not see the mountain at all. I was incredibly fortunate to capture this image with the wonderful light and clouds before it disappeared.
