This incredible image of Diablo Lake, along with Ross Lake and Gorge Lake on the Skagit River, was taken in the North Cascades region of Washington. These three reservoirs and the corresponding dams in the North Cascades Mountains provide water and power to the Seattle area. Diablo Dam, part of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, was completed in 1930 and at that time was the tallest dam in the world.
The intense turquoise hue of the water is attributed to the nearby glaciers that have ground rocks into a fine powder over hundreds of years and made their way through rivers and creeks flowing into Diablo Lake. That fine power, called glacial flour, then floats to the surface and gives the lakes their brilliant color.
This VAST image consists of almost 90 individual photos giving the viewer amazing detail into the scene. The photo was taken about an hour after sunrise, when the sun rose just enough above the Cascade Range for the light to touch the tops of the surrounding mountains.
