375 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Zion National Park, Utah
Step into the enchanting world of Zion, a place named by early Mormon settlers who discovered this stunning area in the 1860s. As they marveled at the vast beauty of the canyon, they couldn't help but draw parallels to the heavenly city, leading them to affectionately call it Little Zion. The towering rocks, resembling natural temples to God, further added to the allure of this picturesque landscape. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Zion, where the remnants of Shunesburg, an early town, were engulfed by the meandering Virgin River, as evident in this captivating photograph.
In 1904, Frederick Dellenbach's awe-inspiring painting of the monoliths in Zion garnered national attention when it was exhibited at the St. Louis World Fair. People from all corners of the country flocked to Utah, eager to witness the breathtaking rock formations and the sheer grandeur of the vast canyon. Recognizing its significance, President Taft designated the area as a National Monument in 1909, marking the end of farming activities by the Mormon settlers within the canyon. Just a decade later, in 1919, Congress bestowed upon Zion the esteemed title of Utah's first National Park.
On July 3rd, 1930, the completion of the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway opened a new gateway for visitors. This picturesque road paved the way for the coveted "Grand Circle Tour," encompassing Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the majestic Grand Canyon. It is along this very road, as it winds through Zion, that I captured this mesmerizing sunset. Visiting during the off-season granted us the privilege of parking alongside the road and venturing out to the bridge. However, during Shuttle Season, the road is reserved exclusively for shuttle transportation.
Witness the astounding power of the Virgin River as it carves its way through Zion Canyon, exposing over 2,000 feet of magnificent sandstone cliffs. Geologists estimate that flash flooding, an agent of erosion, may eventually unveil an additional 1,300 feet of this breathtaking sandstone landscape.
This awe-inspiring photograph was taken in late December, amidst a flurry of snowstorms. With the storm dissipating just before sunset, I seized the incredible opportunity to capture this image. As the fading light bathed the mountains before me, I worked diligently, embracing the fleeting moments of the day. Join me on this visual journey and immerse yourself in the boundless beauty of Zion.
