Valley of the Ten Peaks

172 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Banff National Park, Canada

Over the last several years, I've formed a bit of a tradition to travel to the Canadian Rockies in the fall. It's become one of my happy places, you might call it a pilgrimage! Each year, I try to explore somewhere I've never seen before, and see something different. With so many incredible trails, that's not difficult at all!

On this year, I wasn't planning on visiting the area at all -- I was expecting to be in Utah chasing fall colors instead. Well, that was the plan, anyway! It turned out to be a super late year for fall colors, so as my dates approached, I noticed that there were almost no fall colors yet in the Utah mountains. Things were also running late in Banff, and with a forecast for absolutely lovely weather up north for the next several days, I cancelled my flight to Utah (sorry, Southwest), booked a flight to Calgary on a half day's notice, and headed to Banff!

It turned out to be the perfect choice. The fall colors were perfect, the weather was perfect, the hiking was perfect. I was able to summit Mount Temple, something I had been trying to do for years but kept getting thwarted by snow and ice on a technical section of the climb. It was one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen, and I am so grateful for the experience. I didn't take this photo on that scramble, but rather the day before, when I took a hike up to a nearby pass. The fall colors along the way were just stunning, and the fluffy clouds were the perfect backdrop!

Sometimes, we just have to leave some things to serendipity -- and it all works out in the end!

VAST Print™

A VAST Print™ represents the pinnacle of the photographic medium. Each print is a true photograph created specifically for you using light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom with the industry's highest precision exposure technique. Your print is then sealed with a shine-enhancing protective glossy coating*, adhered to a sturdy aluminum composite backing, and finished in one of two ready-to-hang formats:

  • Frameless floating display: A hidden mounting brace on the rear gracefully "floats" the print off the wall for a sleek, modern look.
  • Framed display: The print is mounted inside one of our handcrafted 100% wood frames with a decorative separation between the print and the frame so that the print appears to be floating within the frame, providing depth and elegance to the finished photo.

*Note: a non-glossy, satin matte coating is alternatively available on request.
