The subject of this photo is Lake Visaisa, located in the Cuneo province of my region, Piedmont, in the northwestern Italian Alps. The photo was taken in autumn 2022, in the midst of a drought with an unprecedented duration in recent history, more than two years. The drought ended only in April 2023, with two months of uninterrupted rains that gave new life to the mountains and nature.
In this photo you can see how the lake was practically dried up and reduced to a puddle, with a volume about ten times lower than the normal level. You can clearly see the signs left by the water in its slow descent.
From a naturalistic point of view, Lake Visaisa is one of the most beautiful in the area, set in a basin where a multitude of larches live on the slopes of the mountains with calcareous and friable rocks. The photo was taken in the period of maximum splendor of the autumn colours, in fact you can see the splendid color of the larch trees throughout the basin.
Taking this photo wasn't easy: I slept in a tent with some photographer friends and I inspected the area well to find the right point to take this very high resolution image. The sun had just risen on the left, but was already illuminating the basin completely and constantly: this allowed me to take more time to take the photo. The photo is the result of two sections: one exposed for the sky and one exposed for the scene. Both sections have been joined with meticulous work all done by hand (no artificial intelligence). Furthermore, the larches in the foreground were photographed with the focus stacking technique to have both the foreground and the background perfectly in focus.
I hope we can appreciate the work I have done and come and visit this beautiful place now that the lake is back to normal levels
