Fall colors in Colorado. A classic American landscape.
Despite being a full-time landscape photographer for a decade, I had never made this pilgrimage before. I had seen too many photos of the same places, heard horror stories about overcrowding, and felt I could find similar scenes in other places.
With a little push out the door from a good flight deal (who doesn't love those?), I decided to spend a week in western Colorado this year, with an open mind. I was blown away by the beauty of the region. Fiery fall colors, massive mountain ranges, and dramatic ever-changing weather. It was almost sensory overload!
The photo's title, "Next Time", comes from our experience that week. We had so many hikes planned, including an ascent of one of the tallest, most dramatic peaks in the area (pictured in this photo on the left), and I was planning to grab some classic images with sunset colors and glow. But Mother Nature had other ideas. It rained and snowed for the better part of every day. We did manage to slip in a few good hikes during the few hours that we did see the sun, but this image actually depicts some of the clearest skies we saw all week. The dramatic weather DID create incredible photo opportunities, including this one. But I still want to climb those peaks and see a sunset or two. Someday. Next time.
We did plenty of exploring and hiking, but I made a stop at a classic location, the Dallas Divide overlook, for this image. With a rainbow of fall colors, dramatic weather, and a coating of snow on the high peaks, the scene was just too perfect to resist. We spent a few hours here, the highlight of which was certainly the process of creating this VAST photo. I hope you enjoy it!
