859 megapixels! A very high resolution, large-format VAST photo print of Mt. Rundle; fine art landscape photo created by Scott Dimond in Banff National Park, Alberta Canada

Mt. Rundle

859 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

One of Canada’s most recognized mountains, Mount Rundle overlooks the town of Banff in Banff National Park, Alberta. The mountain is large enough that it could be considered a small mountain range, as it extends over 7.5 miles with the tallest of its seven distinct peaks being 9,675 ft.

The mountain presents visitors to the Banff area two distinct faces. Viewed from the west side of town, it appears softly slopped in the classic scene across Vermillion Lakes. From the east side of town, along Tunnel Mountain Road, it presents this iconic view with steep sides accenting its many peaks.

Tunnel Mountain Road is the home of two campgrounds and to the south, across the Bow River, is this magnificent view of Mount Rundle. It is this view that campers are lucky enough to wake up to each morning and it is this morning view that I decided to capture in this VAST photo.

So, one fine morning in May, I set up the equipment I needed to create this VAST photo and worked quickly, while the sun was still low and the beautiful wispy clouds danced overhead, to capture the over 250 individual photos I would need to create this exceptionally high resolution photo. I decided to feature just Mount Rundle itself without any of the surrounding landscape because it is such a powerful subject.

If you have ever experienced this morning view for yourself, you know how mesmerizing it can be and just how unaware you become of what else is around you. I think this photo accurately recreates that feeling of just you and Mount Rundle in all its glory.

VAST Print™

A VAST Print™ represents the pinnacle of the photographic medium. Each print is a true photograph created specifically for you using light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom with the industry's highest precision exposure technique. Your print is then sealed with a shine-enhancing protective glossy coating*, adhered to a sturdy aluminum composite backing, and finished in one of two ready-to-hang formats:

  • Frameless floating display: A hidden mounting brace on the rear gracefully "floats" the print off the wall for a sleek, modern look.
  • Framed display: The print is mounted inside one of our handcrafted 100% wood frames with a decorative separation between the print and the frame so that the print appears to be floating within the frame, providing depth and elegance to the finished photo.

*Note: a non-glossy, satin matte coating is alternatively available on request.
