This one's a bit funny. I had hiked up a mountain and had a beautiful foreground beneath me, but when the sunset light came, I was immediately drawn to just the sky. So, this VAST photo features the sky, front and center!
As a meteorologist, this is my time to geek out, and share with you what makes this scene unique! What you see is largely a blanket of altocumulus clouds. Altocumulus clouds are small "puffs" of clouds that are formed by small pockets of air rising in the mid-levels of the atmosphere. They are often referred to as a "mackerel sky", and they can make for some of the most spectacular sunsets.
You might have noticed, however: one of the clouds is not like the rest. This large wispy cloud is in the center of a fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud. Such holes form through a fairly complex process when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing, but the water has not frozen yet.
It sure was exciting to see these patterns -- and even more exciting to see them at sunset, creating a canvas for the sun to light up in a rainbow of colors!
