It was autumn and, after covering many miles in the dark, navigating the network of trails, lakes, and cross-country terrain above the spectacular 20 Lakes Basin Loop, I had accessed the magnificent Shepard Crest ridge. This striking point on the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park is the perfect place to watch the first light of day fall on the glories of Yosemite.
This crisp and perfect snow-dusted morning was one of the last such days, as the following day a cold weather system moved in, bringing snow all the way into the base of Yosemite Valley, thousands of feet below, and closing Tioga Pass and the access to the upper reaches of Yosemite National Park for the winter season.
