719 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Arches National Park, Utah
Arches National Park is best known for its extraordinary concentration of natural sandstone arches, but some of its most expansive views come from the higher points in the park, where the red-rock landscape opens toward the La Sal Mountains to the southeast. Rising sharply beyond the desert, the snow-covered range creates a dramatic contrast with the sandstone formations and broad high-desert terrain below.
I created this VAST panorama on a winter afternoon from one of those elevated viewpoints. Snow from a recent storm still dotted the desert floor and clung to the higher formations, adding another layer of contrast to a landscape more often associated with deep reds and warm desert tones.
Throughout the afternoon, clouds moved steadily across the sky, causing the light to shift constantly across the scene. At times the landscape fell almost completely into shadow, while moments later isolated patches of sunlight would break through and illuminate sections of the desert and mountains.
In the distance, the La Sal Mountains dominate the horizon, their snow-covered peaks catching intermittent light beneath a broad blue winter sky. What drew me to this scene was the scale of it all—the layered desert in the foreground, the sculpted sandstone formations, and the mountains rising far beyond them. It is a very different view of Arches National Park, but one that shows just how diverse the landscape around Moab can be.
