223 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Waimea Canyon Lookout, Kauai, Hawaii
Often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon cuts deeply into the western side of Kauai, revealing layer upon layer of volcanic rock shaped by erosion, rainfall, and the collapse of the ancient shield volcano that formed the island. Its red cliffs, green valleys, and dramatic ridgelines make it one of Hawaii’s most striking inland landscapes.
The forecast for this morning promised clear skies and strong sunrise light ideal conditions for photographing the canyon’s color and depth. I hiked down to the overlook in the dark expecting exactly that. Instead, as the first light reached the rim, a storm began to drift toward us. What should have been a bright morning quickly shifted into something far moodier.
Just before the rain reached the lookout, the pre-dawn light combined with the darkening sky to reveal a rare scene: grey storm clouds pressing into the canyon while the red rock and bright green vegetation still held their color. Minutes after I captured this VAST image, the rain closed in and visibility dropped to nothing.
The unexpected weather created a unique interpretation of Waimea Canyon one defined by contrast, atmosphere, and the fleeting moment before the storm arrived.
