373 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah
Dead Horse Point State Park offers some of the most expansive views anywhere in the Moab region, which is saying quite a bit considering Canyonlands and Arches National Parks are both close by. The park sits high above a vast landscape of deeply eroded canyons, sandstone cliffs, desert mesas, and distant mountains. From its narrow mesa, the views change dramatically depending on which direction you face, with the east rim opening toward the La Sal Mountains and the desert basin below.
I created this panorama about an hour and a half before sunset, facing east rather than toward the more commonly photographed late-day views to the west. By this point the shadows had begun to stretch deep into the canyon, while the remaining sunlight intensified the already rich red tones of the sandstone.
Below, the geometric evaporation ponds of the Moab potash operation cut sharply across the natural desert landscape. Potash mining has been part of the region for decades, and these solar evaporation ponds are visible from many of Dead Horse Point’s eastern overlooks. Beyond them, the snow-covered La Sal Mountains rise dramatically from the desert, creating one of the strongest contrasts in the Moab landscape.
Only minutes before I made this photograph, low clouds had been obscuring much of the mountain range. They shifted just in time, revealing the snowy peaks while still lingering above them. That brief clearing, combined with the warm late-day light on the sandstone and the deepening shadows below, gave me exactly the balance I had been hoping for.
