La Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, Paris, France
When most people think of churches or cathedrals in Paris, France, the first that comes to mind is the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. Not nearly as old, but just as grand in its own way is Sacre Coeur. La Basilique du Sacré Cœur de Montmartre is a Roman Catholic Basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. Designed by Paul Abadie, construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1914. Built from travertine stone, the Catholic monument sits atop the highest point in Paris, at the summit of butte Montmarte.
Its vantage point makes it easily seen from most iconic sites in the city; especially any of the tall monuments and historic sites of Paris, such as the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, or the Eiffel Tower. It sits bright atop the horizon as seen in my VAST Photo of the Paris skyline from Place d’Italie. Upon arrival, one must climb up the many stairs to get to the church, a small pilgrimage in itself. This basilica is simply beautiful, and its architecture feels unique, yet harmonious with other famous churches in Europe. It was hard to put my camera down with so many fascinating features. My wife and I were greeted with incredible panoramic views of Paris as we made the dizzying climb to the top of the dome. As I began to take photos of the cityscape, I decided to include everything I could see into a single photo. The entirety of the whole scene and its cohesive elements is what struck me the most.
I love photos with all-encompassing views and this one is no exception. Due to the extreme width from the top-bottom and left-right of the frame, the three-dimensional photo forced into two-dimensions as seen gives a surreal warped perspective commonly known as a little planet. Due to the tight space and tripod restrictions, I shot this twelve-image composite photo hand-held. This high-resolution panoramic photo of the Paris skyline showcases Paris’ distinct architecture, along with the Eiffel Tower in the distance and two of the towers of Sacre Coeur.
