Fontana di Trevi (or the Trevi Fountain in English) is one of many architectural and artistic marvels around the city of Rome, Italy. Located on the Piazza di Trevi Square, the Fontana di Trevi still sources its water from the last functioning aqueduct of Ancient Rome. During the Middle Ages, it was the only place for Romans to get clean drinking water in the city. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, known for designing the colonnade in front of St. Peter’s Basilica and the fountains in Piazza Navona, was originally tasked with this design but was unable to complete the project due to lack of funding in the late 17th century. Ultimately designed by Nicola Salvi, the thirty-year construction of the baroque fountain was completed in 1762.
At over 85 feet tall and 160 feet wide, it’s the largest fountain in the city. It was sculpted from Travertine Stone and depicts Oceanus, the god of fresh water, being pulled to the sea on his shell-shaped chariot by winged hippocamps (half horse and half fish) and tritons. The changing sea tides are represented by the calm hippocamp on one side and the unruly one on the other side. The statues on either side of Oceanus represent Abundance to the left and Health to the right. The four statues on the top of the building represent the abundance that water brings: fruit, wheat, grapes for wine, and flowers, as seen in the statues’ hands.
This iconic monument in Rome, Italy, attracts millions of visitors per year and is one of the top sights to visit in Rome. I’ve been to Rome a few times and it’s always fascinating to see the source of inspiration of the buildings in Washington, D.C. where I live. Rome does it on such a grand scale with its masterful sculptures and ornate stone carvings; it’s impossible not to stare in awe of the artists’ depictions at Fontana di Trevi and throughout Rome.
This high-resolution photo of the Trevi Fountain was made by compositing 12 photos together in November 2023. It’s a straightforward panoramic photo, simply showing the grandeur of the historic fountain in Rome. This VAST Photo of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy can be printed on a much larger scale than a standard fine art photo of the Trevi Fountain found elsewhere. The breathtaking sculptures can be viewed up close to see the artisans’ detailed work. Busy trying to capture the photo, I forgot to toss a coin over my left shoulder in the Trevi Fountain as is tradition. If the myths are true and it makes it so that I don’t return, I am glad to at least have captured this image as to remember this beautiful place.
