This presidential memorial honors the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the far west end of the National Mall, across from the Washington Monument. Abraham Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, both preserving the Union and abolishing slavery.

The Lincoln Memorial is on every tourist’s list of sites to see in Washington, D.C. for good reason; for the importance of both Abraham Lincoln in the path he set for the future of the country as well as that of the surrounding area and its own place in history. The Reflecting Pool has become a symbolically sacred site for the Civil Rights Movement with the March on Washington in 1963, which brought a quarter of a million people to the National Mall and the steps of the memorial on which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.

This photo not only incorporates the main element of the memorial itself with its solemn prominence in marble and granite, but the frozen Reflecting Pool, World War II Memorial, and Washington Monument opening to the brilliant winter sunrise. Filled with people during the day in all seasons, the early morning hours on a cold winter morning allow one to enjoy the Lincoln Memorial almost by himself. The occasional joggers up the marble steps were my only companions on this frigid morning.

I created this single-row 360° panorama with ten photos; the third of three images created within minutes of each other from the same location. The characteristics of a given light source are paramount in photography. Although taken immediately after the Sunrise version of this photo, the light and resulting mood changed entirely.

The full circle of this single row panorama makes for the initial feel that it was shot with a wide-angle lens but leaves the viewer, many of whom have visited the Lincoln Memorial, wondering where or how exactly this image was taken. The moment of realization that the marble statue of Lincoln and the Reflecting Pool with the Washington Monument are in reality, opposite each other, fascinates me to this day. I enjoy how this method makes for a surreal feel while still being a fairly straightforward image of those simple elements that gracefully come together to make this historic monument.
