This area of the Lower Terrace is known as Palette Spring. The orange section of the spring is created by a crisscrossing flow of water from Palette Spring. The Devils Thumb (the dark feature on the upper mid-left-side of the image) is a dormant hot spring cone.
The Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone is an area a photographer could spend days upon days, seasons upon seasons, year upon year and never capture the raw beauty of this part of Yellowstone. These terraces continuously change shape almost daily and if you visit the same spot a year later it will look totally different. This is due to the fact that as the hot mineral laden water evaporates it lays down new layers of minerals.
Hydrothermal features are also habitats in which microscopic organisms survive and thrive. They are called thermophiles: "thermo" for heat and "phile" for lover. Although they are too small to be seen with the naked eye, trillions are grouped together and appear as masses of color. They are nourished by energy and chemical building blocks. Colorless and yellow thermophiles grow in the hottest water. Orange, brown, and green thermophiles grow in cooler waters.
