The Lower Falls on the Yellowstone River is world famous and is the signature waterfall in Yellowstone National park. It is most likely the second most photographed spot in Yellowstone, with Old Faithful Geyser being the first. At 2.86 Gigapixels, this is quite possibly the largest, highest resolution photo ever take at this location.
At the time of year this photo taken, the Yellowstone River was flowing at nearly flood stage from the spring run off. The river majestically fells some 308 feet (93m) as the sound of the falling water thunders throughout the canyon known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
This shot was made at the Lower Lookout Point that is a steep half-mile trail that initially descended a handful of switchbacks before down even more steeply on steps. The trail eventually ends at a narrow ridge called "Red Rock Point" where there was the lookout deck facing directly towards the falls.
Visible on left the side of the brink of the falls is the green Dragon's Tongue which is the result of a deep vertical crack in the river bed.
If you select either of the two closeup views to the left of the large Pine Tree in the foreground to the left of the fall you can see "Uncle Tom’s Trail" on the south wall of the canyon. This now abandoned .3 mile (0.48km) trail stairway descends 328 steps to an impressive view of the Yellowstone River tumbling down to the canyon floor.
Photographers Note: This is a focus stacked image. Due to the nature of the optics involved in focus stacking, there may be some focus blooming around nearer objects. This can result in a blurry halo around the nearer objects in the photo. You may notice this blooming in the close ups of Uncle Tom’s Trail.
