United States Capitol Building, Washington, District of Columbia
The United States Capitol Building, home of the United States Congress and legislative branch of the federal government. With its distinctive neoclassical style architecture, it was originally completed in 1800. It has been expanded over time with the Capitol Dome and completed in 1863 after being adorned by the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the dome. Arguably the most recognizable building in the United States, the Capitol Building attracts millions of visitors per year.
I originally planned to take this in the winter after the presidential inauguration outside of the popular tourist seasons in DC, but after the January 6th Capitol Insurrection in 2021, fencing prohibited close approach for the following six months. When the fencing came down, I decided to take my chances by coming on a Sunday night in the fall and was rewarded with a clear night and good-natured Capitol Police. From experience, I have seen that it really depends on which officers are on duty as to whether I can get away with using a tripod which was essential for this to work. After nearly three hours as I was finishing my final exposures, the U.S. Capitol Police told me to pack it up. They still graciously gave me a “5 minute warning” which gave me enough time for me to finish my exposures of the prominent United States flag.
The final crop is a 44-image composite (4 rows of 11). Each of the images of the building are exposure blends to capture details in both the bright, well-lit areas, as well as dark shadows accentuated at night. The bottom row includes focus-blended images to have crisp focus from the foreground to the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol Dome.
This ultra high-resolution photo allows for making extremely large fine art prints and produces a hyper-realistic look unlike that of traditional fine art photography. At over two gigapixels, it provides the viewer unrestricted access to the most intricate details of the U.S Capitol Building. Its massive size is still hard to capture in a photo. The Statue of Freedom itself is almost 20 feet tall and weighs over 5 tons! Standing in front of the Capitol of the United States of America brings a mix of emotions, among those national pride as well as awe of the structure itself. I love the way the building looks in the calmness of night. I can only imagine the vision and collaborated efforts needed to realize the creation of this reverent monument.
