Fall colors in Colorado. A classic American landscape.
Despite being a full-time landscape photographer for a decade, I had never made this pilgrimage before. I had seen too many photos of the same places, heard horror stories about overcrowding, and felt I could find similar scenes in other places.
With a little push out the door from a good flight deal (who doesn't love those?), I decided to spend a week in western Colorado this year, with an open mind. I was blown away by the beauty of the region. Fiery fall colors, massive mountain ranges, and dramatic ever-changing weather. It was almost sensory overload!
Unlike most photographers I know, when I travel, I DON'T extensively research known "photo spots". I prefer to just familiarize myself with the kind of scenery I can expect, and the available roads and trails -- and then just go and explore. On my first day, I drove right on past a lake with 50 photographers set up, pulled off onto a dirt road I'd never heard of before, spotted an open area that seemed like it could offer nice vistas, and headed there.
It was the perfect vantage point to capture the expanse of brilliant fall colors -- in a way that only a VAST photo can!
