The Battery Park City neighborhood of New York City did not exist until the 1970s when the land it sits on was reclaimed from the Hudson River using over 3 million yards of soil and rock excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, the New York City Water Tunnel, and other projects. Now, Battery Park, at the southwestern tip of Manhattan, stands as one of the most modern and beautiful neighborhoods in the city.
Due to its placement off the side of Manhattan island, Battery Park City is not a thoroughfare for any major avenues and consequently is a quiet enclave among one of the busiest cities in the world. Aiding this is the fact that it is a mostly residential neighborhood with more than a third of space dedicated to highly cultivated parkland. One of the small hidden parks, a favorite among locals, is Teardrop Park, nestled amidst idyllic condominium and apartment towers.
I wanted to capture the serene peace that falls over the neighborhood every evening, despite the hustle of the famous Financial District only a few blocks to the east, so I went to Teardrop Park on a warm early-Autumn day. I set up my gear on the northern end of the park, looking at the beautiful rows of trees, rock walls, stone paths, park benches, and homes that funnel to the southern point of the park.
During the day, the sky is usually brighter than the land and during the night, they trade places and the reverse is true. That means that, every evening, there's brief moment when the sky and the land, while trading places, have equal luminance values. It is this harmonious balance that I waited to capture. That, in addition to the balanced composition, leads to a VAST photo that evokes the type of serenely idyllic spirit Battery Park City is known for.
