191 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Santorini, Greece
I have always been enamored with the iconic architecture that the Greek island of Santorini's cliffs are famous for. The art historian in me sees the rhythmic patterns of staircases, doorways, facades, windows, and pathways as a real-world homage to M.C. Escher. What a feast for the eyes to be able to spend time visually wandering among these abstract shapes!
Therefore, it has been a longtime goal of mine to capture the beauty of this architecture in the format of an ultra-high-resolution black & white VAST photo.
My goal was to have a final image with the architecture filling the frame on all sides - as if it continued endlessly off the frame. To accomplish this, I did a lot of research, location scouting, and image pre-visualization. I finally found the perfect location atop a building in the town of Imerovigli.
My next goal was to identify a time of year and a time of day when the sun would cast pleasing shadows across the architecture. I landed on mid-afternoon in early October. The next thing I knew I was on a flight to Athens followed by a short hop flight to Santorini.
On location everything went about as smoothly as I could have hoped for. I waited until the mid-afternoon and the shadows were perfect - strong enough to add visual interest but not too overpowering because my vision for the final product was a high-key photo.
The whitewashed buildings glowed softly under the Mediterranean sun, their stark lines and curves enrapturing me. After setting up my tripod, gimbal, and camera system, I took a moment to absorb the scene and then began shooting the 104 separate exposures that make up this VAST photo.
The interplay of light and shadow on the cliffs was mesmerizing and I knew the monochromatic palette I had in my mind for the final photo would be perfect. The black and white medium would strip away distractions, allowing the viewer to focus on the harmony of shapes and the play of light.
Last but not least were the "moments" of people throughout the scene. I loved how many people were hidden in a scene that otherwise seemed empty. Look closely at the final photo and you'll see them! That being said, I wanted one focal point person for the scene in order to both ground the abstract nature of the composition as well as give a sense of scale to the buildings. So, I waited for someone to walk down a particularly-well-placed staircase in the upper-left of the cliffside. We, as viewers of the final photo can place ourselves in this person's shoes as they wander into the dreamlike landscape of dwellings set before them.
