Ponte Vecchio, Florence, Italy
If you spend your holidays in Tuscany, you should not miss a visit to one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Florence offers numerous attractions, of which the Ponte Vecchio is one of the most exciting and famous. In the whole world there is a bridge like the Ponte Vecchio not a second time.
The Ponte Vecchio, which spans the River Arno, is a sight of italian superlatives. It is undoubtedly the most romantic bridge in Florence. Thus, the bridge joins the numerous historic buildings in the romantic style of the Mediterranean that Florence has to offer. In addition, it is the oldest bridge in the city and is one of the oldest segmental arch bridges in the world.
The first precursor of the Ponte Vecchio was already built by the Romans. This original wooden bridge stood on stone pillars and connected the Via Cassia with both banks of the Arno. Even today, the bridge contains wooden elements from this early period. Particularly impressive is the upper area of the Ponte Vecchio, because there the bridge is built with houses and offers space for apartments and shops.
Originally, the buildings on the Ponte Vecchio housed apartments and workshops as well as butcher's shops. Later, the business premises were awarded to goldsmiths and silversmiths, who supplemented the buildings with some structural changes such as bay windows and balconies. Today, the Ponte Vecchio is no longer inhabited. But the beautiful bridge still invites you to go shopping through the jewelry stores and art galleries that are now located there.
