Unique in its depth, complexity, and glaciated ferocity, the North Cascades range of Washington State is one of the great alpine areas of North America. While most vantages require a hard-earned approach to the high country, Mt. Erie in Anacortes offers vista points which can be accessed by car and which showcase the North Cascades to the east, and the San Juan Islands to the west. Between the two lies the fertile and beautiful Skagit River Valley, home to some of the most beautiful farmland in the region.
This high resolution panoramic VAST photo was created on an autumn morning as marine fog hung low in the valley, and the first snows of the season highlighted the enthralling contours of Glacier Peak, Whitehorse Mountain, Three Fingers, and countless peaks beyond. As is natural, this vantage was followed up with a foray into these very mountains, which become irresistible once seen from afar.
