All photographers have their favorite images. Oftentimes, we look back with deep appreciation for the fact that we were fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time. This was one of those times and this is one of those photographs.
I have chased the sunset down to the ocean about ten miles from my home no less than 20 or 30 times, only to have “nothing happen.” This day was different. The sky and the clouds looked promising throughout the afternoon and it seemed worth the effort to make the longer drive to Huntington Beach to photograph perhaps our most iconic Southern California beach subject.
November 11, 2016 turned out to be an unforgettable evening. The sky lit up like no other! I fired off 5 or 6 sets of images at different times as the sun was setting. Each one was different and spectacular, but in the world of large format panoramic composition, not everything goes together successfully in post production. Only the latter part of the sunset with its darker conditions slowed the shutter enough to smooth the detail in the ocean waves so that the images could be blended together as one.
Though there was more orange in the clouds in the earlier shots, this composition shows the pier making a perfect dividing line between the glowing sky and the darkening clouds above. As a bonus, the lights on the pier were illuminated. I couldn’t ask for more.
