Mono Lake, Mono County, California
Mono Lake sits at the western edge of the Great Basin, in the Eastern high Sierras within Mono County California. It is a saline soda lake part of the Mono Basin, meaning that it has no outlet to the
ocean. This contributes to the water's high pH levels and salt concentration. Mono lake is one of the few remaining inland lakes in the Great Basin (along with Great Salt Lake and Lake Abert. The basin was formed over the last 5 million years, while Mono Lake is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago. There is some evidence that Mono Lake covers an older lake that may have covered a large part of Nevada and Utah.
The high level of salts in the water makes the water alkaline and these otherworldly limestone Tufa Towers form. The tufas originally formed at the bottom of the lake (near freshwater springs). As the lake water level has fallen the majestic pillars come into view. It has taken many centuries for these towers to form, and one must be very careful to do no harm while hiking and exploring the area.
This VAST image was created just before sunrise as the light rises behind me creating stunning color on the clouds and water in front of me. In the cool late summer morning, the water is still allowing for an almost perfect reflection. The smoke from the fires all around me in the Sierra glowed in the early morning.
