Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" made Devils Tower a pop culture phenomenon, and for good reason, as it's one of the most mysterious national parks.
Rising 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, Devils Tower has long been a beacon, attracting people and capturing their imaginations since prehistoric times. Today, it continues to hold many meanings for people including American Indians, local ranchers, rock climbers, and thousands of visitors.
Using the authority of the newly created Antiquities Act, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower America's first national monument on September 24, 1906.

June 27, 2021, 5:15am. -- I was up early to allow me time to drive to the location I had spotted the day before. I arrived about 4:45am just as the first light was showing on the horizon so I quickly hiked to this location and sat up my rig. As the first light began to illuminate the clouds I could see that it was going to be a glorious sunrise. With all the trees in the foreground I needed to do a focus stacked panorama so I setup my camera to do focus bracketing. I waited until the Alpen Glow was illuminating the tower and started shooting. As I was shooting, the pinks and reds of the early light exploded. The smoother areas of the tower reflect the light. The grass in the lower right has began to ripen providing some golden tones while the red earth compliments the green of the pine trees.
