The clouds make this image. The color in this image was created by the evening sun light passing through the moisture of the clouds, the shadows were made by the clouds, I love broken clouds like these in the morning or evening. In the distance the San Francisco Peaks can be seen just above the ruin.
This area has some crazy geology, the lava flows from all the cinder cones "fingers" out here and the area where there isn't any has a lot of sandstone and the native inhabitants used that sandstone to make these pueblos and farm there. Its common to see the pueblos on the edge of a small draw or canyon where it was easier to collect water.
Wupatki is an often over looked national monument because it is so close to Grand Canyon which is the neighborhood draw, everyone goes there and drives past Wupatki. I've never seen a crowd here and thats why I go.
