The almond blossoms in California's Central Valley are a spectacular sight each February. The tricky part is, most of the valley is very flat, so it's difficult to find a location from which to photograph them in a way that shows the beautiful surrounding landscape. After extensive scouting, I discovered an area several years ago that had excellent rolling hills, but views from the ground were limited. That year, I used UAVs to capture them from the sky. The photos are spectacular, and one of them is featured in a double-page spread in the 2022 California Visitor's Guide -- but I always wanted something I could print huge on a wall. So the hunt continued.
This year, I finally found it, scouting on the way back from another trip to confirm this was the location I wanted. The only thing left was to wait for the perfect light to capture the scene. California is a sunny state, and the perfect clouds may come just once (or not at all!) during the short period of peak bloom. Thankfully, I'm a meteorologist, and I knew several days in advance which day this would be. I drove over from the Bay Area in rain and hail, and barely had time to enjoy the view before the perfect light burst through the thick stormy clouds. The camera came out, and this is the result!
This image is part of my Awaken series, which showcases the beauty of little-known areas, with the goal of inspiring locals to explore and love our backyard. As of the time of publishing, there is no other image like this in existence. There will undoubtedly be attempts to duplicate it, but few will succeed with the conditions and method required for a large print. As with most images in the Awaken series, serious buyers may choose to have the location revealed to them. I hope you enjoy it!
