Angel Oak, on Johns Island, nearby Charleston, South Carolina. This southern live oak is estimated to be nearly 500 years old, stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). Its longest branch distance is 187 ft in length.
Statistical facts aside, words and imagery fail to capture the beauty and grandeur of this tree. This evergreen tree is native to the southeastern United States. One must witness this tree firsthand to fully appreciate it. I've always been fascinated with trees, Oaks in particular. When I first heard of Angel Oak and its massive and gnarly branches, I knew I wanted to photograph it.
I took the opportunity to take a large detour to Charleston while on a trip to North Carolina in 2013. While it was great to experience this huge southern live oak tree in person, I was unhappy with the photos I came home with.
Needless to say, it felt good to satisfy a five-year itch when I was able to return in 2018. This time I knew I had to get my shot, and the only way to do this tree justice was to make a composite VAST photo, to both provide the perspective I wanted as well as the ability to print it on large scale as to display it in the form this tree warrants. I wanted to emphasize the immense trunk and beautiful intertwining branches, each branch being the size of a substantial tree. This tree must be protected by angels to withstand hurricanes and other environmental and human pressures over hundreds of years to have the grace that it does today.
