762 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Arlington, Virginia
I’m not sure if I’ve ever met a person who didn’t appreciate the beauty in the changing colors of the leaves in autumn. In the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, we enjoy four distinct seasons and I welcome each of them as they come. It gets plenty hot in the summer and quite cold in the winter (unless you compare it to the far north). In the fall, the crisp mornings and the smell in the air are distinct and they make one aware that that summer is over.
I could never boast to be a great outdoorsman, camping and going out for days/weeks into the wilderness, but it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate fall foliage, the forest, and the beauty in nature! I don’t need to drive hours to “get away” from it all. Arlington, Virginia has many acres of public forest and walking trails in the woods. Some lead to the Potomac River and others are simply a wandering path in between neighborhoods. One doesn’t need to travel to far off destinations to view the peak fall foliage in Virginia. The trees and the forest are what led my wife and I to move to the neighborhood of Arlington Forest after having our first child. The houses on our street backed up to Glencarlyn Park and the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail. It didn’t take too much planning to take this shot as I could see the changing of the leaves day after day as they approached peak fall colors.
This shot wasn’t even my original intention. Rather it was something I couldn’t resist but to shoot the morning after I took my young daughter to get some photos of her in playing in the leaves in autumn. In the morning not long after sunrise, the light burst through trees in the forest, illuminating the leaves, making for brilliant and bold colors of the peak fall foliage. The types of trees found in Arlington Forest are varieties of Oak, Poplar, Sycamore, Birch, and Elm to name a few.
This photo reminds me that there is beauty all around us. I love to travel and to see different parts of the world, yet like most people I get up and go to work each day and have a rather domesticated life. It’s important for me to take moments here and there to “stop and smell the roses”, see the vibrant colors of sunrise or sunset, or take a walk in the woods. Inspiration can be found all around us, sometimes even in our backyard.
