The inspiration behind this photo is quite simple: this is a beautiful tree. This Japanese Maple is located in the Portland Japanese Garden within Washington Park in the city of Portland, Oregon. The 12-acre garden was designed in 1963 and is widely considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan.
During a leisure trip with my wife to visit friends in Portland, I knew I wanted to take the time to get at least a few good photographs to take home along with the memories. Since I didn’t know when the next time I’d get a chance to visit the Pacific Northwest, I made a very intentional stop here to get my take on this famously photographed tree. I’ve always been fascinated with eye-pleasing trees. Thinking back, it’s not surprising that I’d be so drawn to photogenic trees. I grew up with a massive White Oak Tree, a specimen Japanese Maple, and a Flowering Japanese Cherry at my childhood home in Arlington, Virginia.
This famous Japanese Maple Tree in Portland, Oregon was easily found along a serene and winding path. There are hundreds of varieties of Japanese Maples. A relatively small tree, this one makes up for its small size with grace. I had to go back to the basics when coming up with my composition. “What is it about this scene that makes me want to photograph it and how do I compose the photo to capture that essence?” I wanted to capture the myriad red and green leaves along the elegantly twisted branches, and the ever-present Pacific Northwest moss encroaching up the trunk. I took a few test shots with a wide-angle lens to get the feel for my direction, then set up my panoramic rails and went to work. To me, this tree feels high energy as it’s beaming with life, yet it exudes the peaceful tranquility that is so fitting in the serene Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon.
