Winters in northern Maine have a stark beauty all their own. The fresh snow contrasting with the cold water under overcast skies lends an almost monochromatic look to the landscape.
Abol Bridge, pictured in this VAST photo, spans the West Branch of the Penboscot River on the Golden Road near Millinocket, Maine and is part of the Appalachian Trail. Mt. Katahdin, the tallest peak in Maine, is covered in clouds to the north (about 6 o’clock around the circumference).
Clear aerial photography requires stable air to capture images sharp enough for a VAST photo. I waited out several days of bitter cold and wind for a calm enough morning to launch my drone and create this 360-degree panorama. Using a stereographic projection and pointing straight down to the ground in post-production digitally maps the sphere into a ball and gives the appearance of a little planet floating in clouds.
Camera settings: 8.8mm, f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/60.
Stitching data: 4 rows of 9 images + 2 zenith images for a total of 38 images.
Equipment used: DJI Phantom 4 Pro, iPhone 7 Plus, and Litchi. RAW conversion from DNG to 16-bit TIFF via Lightroom, aligned with PTGui, and manually blended in Photoshop.
