The morning I made this image was the first time I had been there. The previous night I had driven from Grand Canyon and the last 100 plus miles was in the dark. In southern Utah most of the land is "open range", meaning stock animals are grazing everywhere and a black cow on a black road at night is nearly impossible to see. The posted speed limit is between 50 and 60 and to avoid coming up on a 1000 lb black cow at 50-60 mph I slowed to 40 and then to 30. I made it to this location 3 hours before the alarm rang and I had to rub my eyes awake and crawl out of my sleeping bag. When the morning light illuminates a scene like this you get a nice jolt of adrenaline and you feel better about the previous days long drive.
