Purakaunui Falls

Hidden within the lush native forests of The Catlins on New Zealand's South Island, Purakaunui Falls is one of the country's most beautiful and frequently photographed waterfalls. The Purakaunui River descends approximately 66 feet (20 meters) over three distinct tiers of moss-covered rock, creating a graceful series of cascades surrounded by dense vegetation. Unlike the towering waterfalls of New Zealand's Southern Alps, Purakaunui Falls possesses a more intimate beauty, where flowing water, ancient forest, and delicate natural details combine to create an exceptionally peaceful setting.

The waterfall lies within Purakaunui Falls Scenic Reserve, where a short walking trail winds through magnificent native beech and podocarp forest. Towering tree ferns, some reaching 12 to 15 feet in height, create an almost prehistoric atmosphere beneath the forest canopy. The falls have become such an enduring symbol of The Catlins that they were featured on a New Zealand postage stamp in 1976. Despite their popularity, the surrounding forest retains a remarkable sense of tranquility, with the sound of cascading water and native birds filling the air.

Before departing for New Zealand, I researched potential photographic locations using PhotoHound and immediately recognized Purakaunui Falls as a place I wanted to photograph. We deliberately planned our travel itinerary to include this location. Having photographed waterfalls in many parts of the world, I was particularly attracted to the combination of the waterfall's three graceful tiers and the extraordinarily rich vegetation surrounding it. My goal was to capture not simply the waterfall itself, but the intricate beauty of the entire forest environment.

Creating this photograph required an exceptionally demanding photographic process. Using a 200mm focal length at f/13, ISO 200, and a 1/4-second exposure, I captured 4,037 individual focus-bracketed photographs. These were processed into 240 focus-stacked images, subsequently assembled into a carefully aligned panorama consisting of 10 rows and 24 columns. The completed photograph contains approximately 4.36 billion pixels, measuring 79,668 x 54,724 pixels. The extensive focus stacking preserves remarkable detail throughout the scene, from the foreground rocks and delicate ferns to the cascading water and dense forest vegetation.

At its full native resolution, this photograph can be reproduced approximately 22 feet wide and 15 feet high at 300 pixels per inch without artificial enlargement. Yet its real beauty lies in the opportunity to explore the scene itself. The intricate textures of the rocks, the delicate patterns of the foliage, and the flowing water reveal a richness of natural detail that is easily overlooked when viewing a conventional photograph. Purakaunui Falls is a wonderful example of the quiet, unspoiled beauty that makes New Zealand's Catlins region such a remarkable place to experience and photograph.
