Looking Glass Falls is a picturesque waterfall located in the Pisgah National Forest of western North Carolina, USA. The waterfall is located on the roadside of US 276, which connects Brevard and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The waterfall is surrounded by a rugged, natural setting of granite rock formations and dense forests. The waterfall's name comes from the way the water glistens like a "looking glass" in the sunlight.
During the winter months, the falls often freeze over, creating an even more spectacular and unique sight. It was during one such winter that I captured this large format photograph of the falls, with ice forming over many of the rocks, making it a very difficult place to get to in such weather.
To create this piece, I utilized a variety of advanced techniques, including long exposure to create the silky texture of the water, multi-bracketed exposures to capture the full range of tones and colors, and multiple image tiles joined together to create an exceptionally high-resolution capture.
The result is a breathtaking photograph that perfectly captures the essence of Looking Glass Falls in all its winter glory. The rugged rock formations, the cascading water, and the intricate details of the ice formations are all rendered in exquisite detail and stunning clarity.
