305 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Sweet Creek Falls, Oregon
Deep in Oregon’s Siuslaw National Forest, the Sweet Creek trail follows a narrow forested canyon through a landscape of rushing water, moss-covered rock, ferns, and dense coastal forest. The route passes a remarkable series of waterfalls and cascades before reaching Sweet Creek Falls itself; the Forest Service describes the trail as passing 11 waterfalls along the way.
By the time I reached the falls, I had already passed one cascade after another, but this was the scene I had come hoping to photograph. To find the composition I wanted, I moved out into the middle of the creek, placing the waterfall directly within the surrounding walls of moss and forest.
The weather that day alternated between clouds and brief periods of filtered light. In a dense forest like this, direct sunlight can quickly become harsh, but the passing clouds softened it and occasionally allowed just enough light through to illuminate the moss-covered rocks surrounding the falls. Those moments gave the greens an almost luminous quality while leaving the deeper parts of the forest in shadow.
I created this VAST panorama during one of those brief windows. The flowing water provides the center of the composition, but what drew me most to the scene was everything surrounding it—the saturated moss, fallen leaves, ferns, dark water, and layered vegetation that make Oregon’s coastal forests feel so incredibly lush.
