Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon
Nearly halfway between Florence and Yachats on the central Oregon coast, Heceta Head rises dramatically above the Pacific Ocean. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1892, and on March 30, 1894, its light was illuminated for the first time. More than a century later, Heceta Head remains one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Oregon coast, with its historic lighthouse perched high above a landscape of forested cliffs, rocky coves, and the open Pacific.
Oregon State Parks The lighthouse itself is remarkable, but I have always found the surrounding landscape just as compelling. A short walk into the headlands opens up views in nearly every direction, and after more than a dozen visits, I continue to find new compositions here. Somewhat unexpectedly, my favorite conditions are often at dawn. Despite facing west toward the ocean, the early morning frequently brings softer light, coastal fog, low clouds, and a quieter atmosphere than sunset.
This photograph was made in the stillness before sunrise, looking south across the cove toward the historic Cape Creek Bridge and the forested headlands beyond. Low clouds and fog clung to the hillsides while the Pacific rolled steadily into shore below. Above it all, the first light of morning introduced just a trace of pink and red into an otherwise cool, muted sky.
What drew me to this scene was the layering: the repeating lines of the surf in the foreground, the bridge tucked beneath the trees, and the headlands slowly disappearing into the mist. It is a quieter view of Heceta Head than the classic lighthouse composition, but one that, to me, captures the atmosphere of the Oregon coast just as well.
