American Samoa
National Park of American Samoa is one of the most unique destinations in the entire National Park System. It is the only U.S. national park south of the equator, and unlike many parks in the lower 48 or Alaska, it is deeply intertwined with the islands, villages, and daily life of American Samoa. Spread across a remote chain of volcanic islands in the South Pacific, the park protects a landscape of tropical rainforest, steep coastlines, rugged beaches, and coral-fringed shores.
It is also not an easy place to photograph. Reaching American Samoa takes real effort, and once there, finding strong compositions can be just as challenging. I drove the island a number of times before finding this vantage point, tucked just off the side of the road and reached by a short hike. Even after finding it, I returned three evenings in a row hoping the weather and light would come together.
The conditions here changed constantly. Rain would move through, then storms, then a brief break of calm light, only for the cycle to begin again. On this evening, just after the sun had dropped below the horizon, the low clouds along the western sky began to glow with soft yellow and orange color while heavier storm clouds still hung above the scene.
That contrast is what drew me to this photograph. The quiet surf, the dark volcanic coastline, and the handful of palm trees rising from the small offshore sea stack all helped define the scene. For me, this image captures something essential about American Samoa: a place that feels remote, wild, tropical, and constantly changing with the weather and light.
