Manarola is one of the most famous and photographed villages in Italy. It is one of the five villages in the northwestern Italian region of Liguria known collectively as Cinque Terre, or “five lands.” Together with their coastline and surrounding hills they form Cinque Terre National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After capturing the colors of the amazing sunset that had caused Manarola to glow in the waning sunlight of Manarola, Cinque Terre, Sunset, I stayed after most tourists and photographers had gone on to do other things, for I knew that the beginning of dusk would create a different mood of the village. As the warm colors of the sun faded into the indigo of blue hour and then the dark of night, a violet hue settled over the village complemented by the artificial lighting that turned on as life within the village slowed and people headed into restaurants and their homes. The people and fishing boats stayed protected in their cliffside haven while waves continued to crash upon the shore, breaking against the ragged cliffs. Life slowed for the evening, waiting for the return the next day of the warm, golden Italian sun that would rise over the hills behind them.
