Manarola is one of the most famous and photographed villages in Italy. It is one of the five villages in the northwestern Italian region of Liguria known collectively as Cinque Terre, or “five lands.” Together with their coastline and surrounding hills they form Cinque Terre National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
I’ve been wanting to photograph this village for quite some time. Scheduling and COVID-19 pandemic limitations finally allowed me to travel to the region and capture some VAST photos. After traveling by train from outside the park, I scouted all the viewing areas I had researched in advance and settled on the one that would give me the greatest viewpoint for the light of the coming evening - and what a great evening it turned out to be.
That evening I was blessed with some amazing light, rough seas, and a gorgeous sunset, all for making some great images. While I had to constantly compensate for the high winds and carefully execute the series of images I needed, it was amazing to watch the light change and make Manarola glow in the evening hours. After several attempts of working through the series, I had finally captured all the short and long exposures I needed to reflect the beautiful sharp details in the village as well as the blurred movement of the rough seas.
