The Étang de Thau, an estuarial lagoon, is the largest body of water in the Hérault department of France. It is fed by freshwater streams and rivers and the tides of the Mediterranean Sea that enter the lagoon through canals in the towns of Marseillan and Sète, seen here on the left side of the frame. Sète, which is built atop the hill known as Mont Saint-Claire, provides France with a commercial and fishing port, linking mainland France with Corsica and North Africa.
For this image of the lagoon just before the sun touches the horizon, I wanted to show the peacefulness and calm that exists here even during wintertime. It is a peacefulness well know by sailors who dock their boats on calm waters and are gently rocked to sleep in the hours following the setting sun.
This VAST image was created by combining tilt and shift optical movements on a medium format technical camera with panorama stitching.
