One of my passions lately, called the Awaken project, has been exploring little-known locations that have rarely, if ever, been professionally photographed. My goal is to encourage residents of these areas to explore and love their backyards.
During this journey, I have come across countless spectacular scenes. But this one stands out for distilling so many of the things that make California special.
However, the scene rarely looks like this; it is often hazy, smoky, and hot, making it impossible to photograph these faraway scenes. Even on the few crisp days, the skies are often clear, the hills golden brown for most of the year, and the peaks snow-free. This past winter, there was perhaps only one suitable day in the entire year to capture this scene. Being a meteorologist, I knew this in advance, and headed out for a few nights to check it out and explore the area. On my second night, sure enough, this happened.
This image is part of my Awaken series, which showcases the beauty of little-known areas, with the goal of inspiring locals to explore and love our backyard. As of the time of publishing, there is no other image like this in existence. There will undoubtedly be attempts to duplicate it, but few will succeed with the conditions and method required for a large print. As with most images in the Awaken series, serious buyers may choose to have the location revealed to them. I hope you enjoy it!

Our photographic prints are created using a specialty, large-format fine art printer designed to produce archival, museum-grade prints. They are true "chromogenic" prints: light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom using state-of-the-art lasers to produce the sharpest possible image. Our photographic prints are available in one of two finishes: glossy and lustre. Glossy prints have a rich, silky saturation and are great for environments where the lighting and reflections have been carefully thought through. Lustre prints have a bright, sparkle-like finish that diffuses reflections and are therefore more versatile for environments where the lighting and reflections are less under your control.
Your print comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the artist and the printmaker: one that you will affix to the finished piece and one that remains standalone. Additionally, your print's provenance is tracked and verified using state-of-the-art digital technology. Learn more.
Our acrylic glass displays are ready-to-hang works of art that contain one of our photographic prints sealed between flame-polished acrylic glass and an aluminum backing. A hidden mounting brace on the rear causes the display to gracefully "float" off the wall for a sleek, modern frameless look that complements nearly any decor style.
