I’ve now had the amazing chance to visit most of the National Parks in the United States and I keep coming back (in every way) to Death Valley. This massive 3,000 square mile National Park in Eastern California has so much to offer. Sitting in the Mojave Desert in the summer it is the hottest place on earth and the lowest elevation in North America.
Death Valley is known for being a very dry location, sitting in a “rain shadow” of four major mountain ranges the average rainfall is a tiny 2.36 inches per year. However for my trip in the winter of 2023 it rained for three days in a row. This created some of it’s own problems, flash floods, road closures and the like. However, it gave me a chance to capture amazing weather that is a very rare site to see.
In the late afternoon I set off on the West Road an unpaved, dusty dirt road that runs parallel to Badwater. I setup and waited for the clouds and light to change, a rain storm had come and gone and the sun was getting lower in the sky. I setup towards the sunset and as luck would have it the Panamint Range of mountains.
In this VAST image I was able to capture the breaking storm, the light chasing into the clouds. The snow-covered mountain peaks still awash with light. In the darker foreground is the road and the remaining water from the failure storm.
In this photograph, I aimed to captured the delicate balance between power and tranquility, chaos and serenity. It is an invitation to immerse yourself in the grandeur of nature's creation, to witness a fleeting moment when the elements align in perfect harmony.
